As a young man, Henry Garrard III discovered that the verbal skills he had sharpened in his school’s “speaking contests” could go hand-in-hand with his desire to help people solve their problems.  He was destined to become a lawyer.

A native of Washington, Georgia, Garrard paid for his education by working and farming. He earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Georgia – graduating cum laude – and he became a licensed Georgia attorney in 1971.

After serving as a Judge Advocate General, or JAG, in the U.S. Air Force from 1971-1975, Garrard has since used his advocacy skills to help those who have been injured by the negligent and inappropriate acts of individuals and companies.

Garrard has extensive experience in handling complex mass tort and product liability litigation. He has served as lead counsel in complex product liability jury trials in state and federal courts throughout the United States, including several consolidated multi-plaintiff trials against numerous defendants.

Garrard has been a trailblazer in the area of transvaginal mesh litigation, having investigated and pursued these cases since 2006.  He was previously lead counsel for the plaintiffs in the Mentor ObTape MDL in the Middle District of Georgia, and he presently serves as lead counsel for the plaintiffs and a as a member of the plaintiffs’ steering committee in the Bard Women’s Pelvic Repair Mesh MDL in the Southern District of West Virginia.  His firm is currently handling hundreds of transvaginal mesh cases in various courts throughout the country.

Garrard is a frequent lecturer about surgical mesh-related injuries and litigation, sharing his experience and expertise with other attorneys. He is co-chair of the American Association for Justice’s Pelvic Mesh/Vaginal Mesh Litigation Group. He also served as a faculty member at the transvaginal mesh teleseminar sponsored by the American Association for Justice, and he is a faculty member at the Transvaginal Mesh HB Litigation Conference in Amelia Island, Florida.  He presented on transvaginal mesh litigation at the Mass Torts Made Perfect seminar in Las Vegas, and the New Jersey Plaintiffs-Only Pelvic Mesh Litigation Workshop in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

In June 2010, following one week of a consolidated jury trial, Henry and his litigation team successfully resolved the claims of more than 100 women implanted with the Mentor ObTape mesh product. Garrard has been interviewed about transvaginal mesh product liability by prominent newspapers such as The Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune and Florida Today, as well as in television interviews.  Garrard strongly believes that people who have been harmed by defective medical devices need to seek the assistance of an experienced lawyer.

“If they do not engage an attorney, there is a great likelihood that they will be disadvantaged by corporate America,” Garrard says.

When he isn’t practicing law, Garrard enjoys spending time with his family, including four children and four grandchildren, as well as “working on the land and helping to preserve what nature has created.”
