Transvaginal Mesh Treatment Has Caused Complications
Millions of women throughout Europe and the United States and Canada have pelvic floor muscles and tissues that have been weakened or injured by childbirth, chronic constipation, hysterectomy or trauma. Those weakened muscles can lead to painful conditions that include:
- Pelvic organ prolapse (POP): When organs such as the bladder, uterus, small intestines and rectum lose pelvic support, fall out of place and press against the vaginal wall, causing a loss of bladder control; and
- Stress urinary incontinence (SUI): When the urethra cannot control urine flow, resulting in the sudden, involuntary loss of urine when coughing, sneezing, laughing or engaging in any other activity that puts pressure on the bladder.
For treatment, many female patients have received transvaginal mesh implants. In many cases, the mesh implants have caused painful complications when implanted in the female pelvic floor region, which problems are often related to the mesh eroding, degrading, shrinking, curling, rolling or migrating.
Among the manufacturers and sellers of transvaginal mesh products are:
- C.R. Bard, Inc.;
- Mentor Worldwide, LLC;
- American Medical Systems (and its parent, Endo Pharmaceuticals);
- Johnson & Johnson (and its subsidiary, Ethicon, Inc.);
- Boston Scientific Corp.; and
- Covidien PLC (and several of its subsidiaries, including Tyco Healthcare, Tissue Science Laboratories and Sofradim Production).
FDA Warns About Transvaginal Mesh Products
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an alert in October 2008 about transvaginal mesh, warning doctors and patients about the more than 1,000 adverse event reports it had received in a three-year period. Those included:
- Mesh erosion into the vagina, bladder and bowel (or vaginal erosion);
- Severe pain throughout the pelvic area;
- Bone and hip infections;
- Inflammation;
- Bowel, bladder or blood vessel perforation and bleeding;
- Dyspareunia (painful sexual intercourse); and
- Recurrence of pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence.
In July 2011, the FDA issued a Safety Communication expanding upon an earlier warning regarding transvaginal mesh. The FDA said it had received 2,874 additional reports of complications associated with transvaginal mesh devices from 2008 to 2010. The FDA emphasized that serious complications associated with mesh for transvaginal repair of pelvic organ prolapse are not rare.
“Furthermore, it is not clear that transvaginal POP repair with mesh is more effective than traditional non-mesh repair in all patients and may expose patients to greater risk,” the FDA report said.
Many women have needed multiple corrective surgeries and vaginal or rectal reconstructive surgeries to treat problems created by these defective transvaginal mesh products – while still suffering the uncomfortable pelvic conditions that they had hoped would be treated.
