Hernia Mesh Products
Hernia mesh products were initially developed and used in the 1950s. Surgical mesh in general has since become a widely-accepted treatment for hernia repair. Despite this long-term experience, manufacturers have released an increasing array of products, constructed from a variety of different materials, with different coatings and features. Some of these products have proven to have dangerous defects that cause life-altering injuries. Because of the way that these products are allowed to come on the market, there was little done to prove that these products are safe and effective before they were sold for permanent implantation.
For treatment of inguinal or abdominal hernia, many patients have received mesh implants. Mesh devices have been used in hernia repair for decades, but certain products marketed more recently have involved newer procedures and different materials that were not adequately tested to determine their safety. In many cases, these mesh implants have caused painful and life-altering complications. Mesh-related complications often require additional surgeries to remove the mesh and repair the same hernia that the defective mesh was implanted to treat.
